Sprinkler Blowouts For Friday, November 8, 2024

Yesterday was a productive day for our sprinkler blowouts. Out of over 60 scheduled stops, only one was missed due to a locked gate. We also had to invoice two customers for not canceling their service. Canceling is straightforward—we include a link in the notification text. We aren’t required to include a cancellation link, but we do so with two goals: to save us an unnecessary trip and to give customers a chance to avoid an invoice and the associated hassle.

For the past 3-4 years, our non-cancellation fee has been $30, but we’re increasing it to $40 next year. While many customers use the cancellation link, we’ve had about six non-cancellations this season, a significant improvement from the roughly two dozen last year. We hope the fee increase will encourage more attention to cancellations and help offset the costs and time associated with organizing, scheduling, and routing. With everything on my plate, I spend about 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, working diligently at my desk.

My nephew Reese did an excellent job working with Jesse yesterday. For those who remember Challis from a few years back, Reese is his younger brother. Being a family business, it’s always great to have family members pitch in to help keep things running smoothly. Reese has one more training day and will be working independently starting Monday.

Michael will head to Meridian after finishing his regular job to help us again. Although it’s a minor route of just six stops, it’s still progress. I believe Michael will also work all day on Saturday, and we’ll keep him assigned to the Meridian area. The specific zip code for his Saturday route is yet to be determined.

I recently ran an ad on Indeed to find help for the final weeks of sprinkler blowouts and was amazed by the response. We received over 30 applications for the technician position, proving that Indeed is an effective tool for finding help. We’ll remember this for the busy spring and summer seasons when work orders surge.

Next week, we’re training a new technician on Monday and Tuesday. If he works out, we’ll have 5 out of the 6 positions we aimed to fill. Our sixth machine, “Orange Julius,” will need its hose reel replaced before it can be used in the field again. We are gradually switching from ReelCraft reels, which we jokingly call “ReelCRAP reels,” to CoxReels. Although the electric rewind on the CoxReels is a bit slower, they have proven far more reliable than the ReelCraft reels.
